Review: Diggy - Unexpected Arrival

*As previously posted for XXLMag.com* (written by myself)

Diggy’s fight for legitimacy in the rap game is a tough one: he’s still a teen; he first gained national recognition for his role on a reality show; and, though he’s the son of a hip-hop legend, he has to prove that nepotism isn’t the only reason he’s in the musical limelight. But the 2011 XXL Freshman has worked hard over the last year and change to break away from the shadows of Run’s Houseand not simply use his father’s legacy to cement himself in the industry. After a couple well-received mixtapes and successful singles, Diggy makes his presence known with his Atlantic Records debut, Unexpected Arrival.
From a production standpoint, album offers up a strong class of beatsmiths, consisting of Da Internz, D’Mile and Happy Perez. Their touch makes the album something sonically easy to listen to from top to bottom. The team created a project that possessed smooth transitions between laid back and up-tempo tracks.
Conceptually, the debut holds up, with tracks such as “Glow In The Dark,” about prevailing through trails of making it in the industry. Diggy also cooks up a surprise with track “Unforgivable Blackness,” which touches on race and politics in a way the 16-year-old hasn’t in the past. While some may feel content like that may be a little mature for his target demographic, Diggy bucks simply doing the expected, and executes these tracks with ease and gives young listeners food for thought.
Throughout the release, the upstart displays a versatile delivery and bars with flashes of the lyrical depth of an artist more seasoned than he. On “Need To Know,” Diggy shows his clever wordplay with bars like, “Put yourself in my Lou’s/All they see is green, they don’t ever see my blues.” The young’n does a solid job balancing solo tracks, allowing listeners to get a feel for him as an artist, with solid collabs from Jadakiss, Tank and Jeremih.
Unlike many young artists, Diggy stays away from alot of catchy, jingle-esque hooks and songs about trends on this project. Clearly the young MC wants to be taken seriously by casual and hardcore fans alike. With his Unexpected Arrival, Diggy will convince some skeptics that he’s here for a reason. —Christian Mordi @mordi_thecomeup

Review: Teyana Taylor - TMOTT

I want to start this review in the right place. I know Teyana Taylor from MTV's Sweet 16. I didn't know she had any musical talent. My first impression was she can definitely out dress me on a bad day. But I hear Taylor's revision of Drake's Take Care hit "Marvin's Room" on the blogs called "Her Room." I was surprisingly impressed.

Now Teyana Taylor comes out after her recent drop from Star Trak with a brand new mixtape, which I was skeptical because she called is The Misunderstanding of Teyanna Taylor title is  just like miss Lauryn Hill. I downloaded it and pressed play and I loved the mixtape. The writing down to the production is phenomenal but this isn't a life changing project by any means. Definitely came at the right time I like how she kept the features to a minimum but not too short.

Some key tracks from the project were DUI (FT. FABOLOUS & JADAKISS), a very radio friendly track that will surely hit the airwaves. Other standout tracks were BAD BOY featuring Honey Cocaine (whose name I have been hearing alot on the blogs as well.) and Mystery Lover.

Solid project. I rated it a 3.5. out of 5. --Micheal Medium @MICHAELMEDIUM

                                                 Week 5

Once again its about that time for my favorite time of the week Was good Yall?!..
Sorry bout the hold up..last week was pretty hectic with scheduling, Bookingz, and Networking. Booked a couople shows coming up for the spring thats just in detail, and was just invited to a Music Conference in Miami in June..im so excited i never been to Miami let alone get to meet a pool of A&Rs im very humble for the oppurtunity.

MELOdious is getting Wrapped up..just waiting on 4 more songz to clear and its a wrap!...im really excited about it even though its been prolonged because it feels like my 1st tape all over again..expressing whats truly in my heart instead of expressing what needs to be heard ya dig? it gets discouraging when your platform gets a little shaky but nobodys perfect we all have pitfalls but it makes our outcome MUCH more sweeter. i havent been writing as much as i should be because when its time to record, alot of stuff thats been on my chest just flows freely in comparison to me writing thingz down to alter it for the fan.

Im looking into new avenues and lanes so im really excited for the Mar.Melo & Yung Hu$tl3 Muzik GrouP brand for the upcoming months towards the summer. Sit Tight.. Roll Up..And Anticipate for whats to come..because i only stay out of the scene when your working..and actionz speak louder than your wordz..even in rap! You kno i never leave empty handed.. heres The Latest Hustl365 Ep.2 Visualz "Welcome To Yung Hu$tl3" Get to see how I Live! Till Next Time Yall..

Review: Curren$y and Styles P 1st and 28th

                                         The 1st & 28th

The 1st & 28th is an interesting concept, and for core fans definitely leave more to desire. Unfortunately in an era where less is more, a 5 track EP should be flawless. This tape is not. It’s almost better suited to be a bunch of singles releases over the span of the week.

I’ll start by saying that I’m extremely happy with artists from different circles branching out to try new and different things. Steps like these are what keep the culture alive and strong in spite of what social media might tell you. When I first got news of this project I’ll admit I was a little surprised but decied to still be open to the idea. In an era where every duo project will now be compared to Watch The Throne I wanted to see the approach Styles P and Curren$y. Unfortunately 1st and 28th is neither the pothead nor street version of Watch The Throne.

Yes the project is short, but then again it is an EP. However when listening to the tracks you can’t help but feel the collection of songs was better suited to be random singles released to blogs as opposed to a complete body of work. There are some high points to the project. Lean is clearly the standout. The hypnotic beat serves as a awesome canvas for Styles to do what he does best, lay down gritty bars. Curresn$y doesn’t play second fiddle as he manages to stick to his “I rap cause Adult Swim isn’t on” style flow.

Where the 1st & 28th falters is that, sonically it doesn’t sound like there was a gameplan, which at times works but not in this case. The songs that were almost tolerable are destroyed by forcing the issue, or adding extra elements that don’t help the cause. I’m not to sure how much time was taken out to do this, but I really do wish that both artists would have taken a little more to fine tune this.

The 1& 28 is an interesting concept, and for core fans definitely leave more to desire. Unfortunately in an era where less is more, a 5 track EP should be flawless. This tape is not.

After a few listens “1st & 28th earned a 2.5/5 rating. --Claude Dienhoue @atclaude

Review: Noah Caine The Preseason

The Pre-Season
Braggadocio – check
Substance- check
Quality- check
Up and coming Queen native Noah Caine definitely has made some noise with his recent offering The Pre-Season. The Ashley Outrageous sponsored project without sounding to cliché is truly a welcomed gift. The intro track speaks of the worth ethic of famous atheletes and after listening to the tape through I thought back a quote from Bo Jackson. “All men are created; some just work harder in the Pre-Season.”

The beat selection is superb, and gives the jazzy, purist feeling reminiscent of Illmatic. I can easily hear tracks from the tape blasting from the headphones of train hopping city kids or pumping from the speakers of your favorite street wear boutique.  Caine’s raps are side by side to your favorite up and coming lyricist and betting the house on him is a very smart bet. The versatility of his flow is an added bonus.
It hard to pick just a few but two stellar standouts on the tape are: The Champion and The Prize. On The Champion, Noah displays his versatility over one of Pharrell’s classic productions. The smooth beat affords him a chance to subtly show you why he’s not your run of the mill New York rappers. The Prize flawlessly blends braggadocio, misogynistic thoughts, NY tough talk, and aspiration; all while having you nod you head to the beat.
If I had any concerns with The Pre-Season I simply wonder if other regions will appreciate the project as much. At times the songs sound very East Coast oriented and although this was perfect for me, will rap fans across the map share the same sentiments. --Claude Dienhoue @atClaude
After several thorough listens Noah’s “The Pre-Season” earned a 4/5 rating.

Good Afternoon everyone, I  (Chris Mordi, creator of site) have decided to begin a weekly journal entry from three rising artists in the industry. Consider it a inside look at the artists life.                                                  Week 5

Was Good Yall.. March Madness is Approaching and it is Definitely Self Explanatory lol. Im trying to Reach a March 20th Deadline for my MELOdious mixtape to be finished and it is quite humbling. I look at all my competition and admire the fact of their grind and how i can be able to match theirs. As I flick ashes with the council i ask myself..Who defines your competition? is it the established artists?

The up and coming artists? or the artists on the same tier as you? Of course the established artists succumbed the downfalls of most rappers but thats more of a inspiration more so as competition. And up and coming rappers in the same tier as me can only motivate me to match what they do. So the only thing to do is to suppress the magazine/blog buzz...the he say/she say from fans around you..the progress of other artists..and focus on my Yung Hu$tl3 Muzik Group brand as a whole. We are all human and negativity brings forth doubts, but the "MELOdious thoughts" in my head give me satisfying reminders of what i love to do everyday... Music..

Here is one of my Favorites whenever I wanna be alone off my 2nd Mixtape Face To The Crowd. And Also another Track from my 2nd Tape Live for The Moment.. This is how the week has been for me until next time..

Video: Amanda Seales - This Too shall pass

New music from one of my favorite Femcees, Amanda Seales. I had the honor of interviewing her on my radioshow 'The Come Up' awhile back, by far on of the smartest artists I have ever interviewed. This track, produced by Skibeatz, will be on her next project Technicolor Lover, set to drop soon. Lookout for it, and show your love below.
